Ebonyi State Needs a Tech Boost: Ex-VC Urges More Investment

Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – Professor Bernard Odoh, a distinguished former Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has issued a strong call for Ebonyi State to significantly increase its investment in technology. Speaking recently, Professor Odoh emphasized that embracing technological advancements is no longer optional but a critical necessity for the state’s economic growth, competitiveness, and overall development.
Professor Odoh’s appeal comes at a time when many Nigerian states are recognizing the transformative power of technology. However, he argues that Ebonyi State lags behind and needs to adopt a more proactive and strategic approach to leveraging technology. He noted that the state’s potential for innovation and entrepreneurship is being hampered by a lack of infrastructure, skilled personnel, and funding for tech-related initiatives.
“Investing in technology is investing in our future,” Professor Odoh stated. “It’s about creating opportunities for our young people, attracting businesses, and improving the quality of life for all Ebonyi citizens. We need to prioritize investments in areas like digital literacy, broadband infrastructure, and support for tech startups.”
Key areas for investment, according to Professor Odoh, include:
- Education & Training: Developing curriculum that emphasizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects and providing training programs to equip the workforce with the digital skills needed for the 21st century.
- Infrastructure: Expanding broadband access across the state to ensure that businesses and individuals have reliable internet connectivity.
- Startup Ecosystem: Creating a supportive environment for tech startups through incubators, accelerators, and access to funding. This includes streamlining regulations and providing mentorship opportunities.
- Government Digitalization: Modernizing government processes and services through the adoption of digital technologies to improve efficiency and transparency.
Professor Odoh further suggested that the government should explore partnerships with private sector companies, universities, and international organizations to leverage their expertise and resources. He also stressed the importance of creating a conducive policy environment that encourages innovation and investment in the technology sector.
The former VC’s call is expected to resonate with policymakers and business leaders in Ebonyi State. Many believe that his insights will help shape the state’s technology agenda and drive economic progress. Increased investment in technology promises not only economic benefits but also social improvements, including better healthcare, education, and access to information for all residents of Ebonyi State. The state's leadership is now faced with the challenge of translating Professor Odoh's recommendations into tangible action, securing a brighter, technologically advanced future for Ebonyi.
